Night adventures on Illovo Beach
Torches, buckets and a crab hunt after dark.
12 August 2026
Ask a group on the Friday morning what they will remember, and it is almost never the thing on the schedule that looked most exciting on paper. It is the night the whole camp walked down to the beach with torches.
What a night adventure looks like
We go down after supper, once it is properly dark. Everyone carries a torch, groups carry a bucket, and the tide line is the whole playing field. Ghost crabs come out at night and they are fast, which is the entire point. Nothing is kept. Whatever goes in the bucket gets looked at, counted and put back where it came from.
Why it works
- It is genuinely new. Most learners have never been on a beach in the dark.
- It levels the group. Speed and eyesight beat confidence, so quiet learners often lead.
- It is active without being competitive, which suits the end of a long day.
- It teaches something real about the shoreline without anybody calling it a lesson.
How we run it safely
The walk is staffed by our camp host and events host alongside the school's teachers, the group stays above the water line, headcounts are done at the gate, on the sand and back at the tents, and nobody goes in the sea. Closed shoes and a working torch are the only kit needed.
It pairs well with the fire. Beach first, fire afterwards, and by the time the last story is told the camp puts itself to bed.
