Why the campfire hour matters

The session teachers underestimate and learners remember for years.

On paper the campfire is a slot at the end of the day. In practice it is the reason schools come back.

Something happens when a group sits in a circle in the dark with no screens and nowhere to be. Learners who say nothing in a classroom will talk at a fire. Groups that have been split into cliques since February sit differently once they have shared a tent row and built the fire themselves.

Our camp hosts run the session lightly. A prompt, a story, space, and an adult who is comfortable with silence. There is no performance element and nobody is put on the spot.

If your group has one thing to protect in the programme, protect this hour. Everything else on a camp can be moved.
